-
- Irvine, California--March 26, 1991--Sonnet Technologies, Inc. introduced
- FontCard™ NTX, the first product that adds to the standard font capabilities in
- the Apple® LaserWriter® IINTX.
-
- With FontCard NTX, users of Apple’s most powerful laser printer will have
- immediate access to an additional 25 PostScript® language fonts from Adobe
- Systems. The card plugs directly into a font expansion connector on the
- LaserWriter IINTX controller board to make available a special collection of
- headline and best-selling typefaces. These are stored in read-only-memory
- (ROM).
-
- Every FontCard NTX comes bundled with Adobe Type Manager® software and
- PostScript language versions of the 25 fonts for the Macintosh®. This
- collection of fonts is marketed separately by Adobe as Adobe Type Set™ 1, 2 & 3
- font software packages. Adobe Type Manager software produces sharp characters
- of these fonts on the Macintosh screen.
-
- Having a resident font card significantly improves performance for Macintosh
- users who are accustomed to downloading fonts over an AppleTalk® network. If a
- selected font is not among the LaserWriter IINTX’s standard 35-typefaces, then
- the LaserWriter software must look elsewhere for the font. The software first
- checks for a font expansion card or font hard disk attached to the printer, but
- otherwise the font is typically found in the System Folder of the Macintosh and
- downloaded over AppleTalk before printing. Downloading fonts each time a
- document is printed can noticeably lengthen printing time. With FontCard’s 25
- fonts immediately available in ROM, the time required to print a document can
- be shortened considerably, depending on the number of resident fonts used in
- the document, the volume of traffic on the network, and the amount of RAM
- installed in the IINTX printer.
-
- Because FontCard NTX becomes an integral part of the printer, every connected
- user will have immediate transparent access to the additional fonts. The
- Sonnet™ product also includes bit-mapped versions of the 25 fonts which can be
- installed on every Macintosh attached to the network. Installing the bit-mapped
- fonts in the Macintosh System file allows the user to select those fonts in a
- document and to print them as scalable outline characters using fonts resident
- in the card’s ROM.
-
- The 25 fonts included in FontCard NTX and Adobe Type Set 1, 2 & 3 font software
- have been carefully selected to augment the original LaserWriterII set.
- Fourteen headline fonts–all from different type families–present page designers
- with a substantial new variety of fonts. The product also includes five fonts
- from the Helvetica* typeface family, adding light, black, and compressed
- versions to the Helvetica regular and narrow families in the Apple printer.
- Four versions of the very popular Adobe Garamond™ typeface also come in the
- package. Finally, the Tekton™ typeface and its oblique version complete the
- FontCard NTX set. Tekton is a font designed by an architect to simulate hand
- lettering for drawings. (See Figure 1 for a complete list of Adobe® typefaces
- in FontCard NTX.)
-
- Roger Bundy, MIS Director of Taco Bell in Irvine, California is one of the
- first to use FontCard NTX. “Our Macintosh users are always requesting more
- fonts, so we are continually downloading fonts with our documents,” said Bundy.
- “Over time this impacted the network. Now, however, with FontCard we are
- printing documents faster and getting back some of our network.”
-
- FontCard NTX can also be cost-effective in small businesses. Award-winning
- designer Marilynn Bleck of Marilynn Bleck Graphic Design in Irvine, California
- commented “Sonnet and Adobe have selected some very nice fonts in Type Set 1,
- 2 & 3 that complement the original LaserWriter II set. Because they are
- available to everyone on the network with the Sonnet FontCard, the
- cost-per-user is extremely attractive.”
-
- The FontCard NTX will be available in volume in April through authorized
- resellers. Interested resellers may contact Sonnet at (714) 261-2800 for
- information. FontCard NTX will have a suggested retail price of $595. Sonnet
- estimates that there are 100,000 installed LaserWriter IINTX printers.
